“If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours.”
On Monday 28 October, 2024, students GD Goenka Public School Mahanagar, Lucknow had the opportunity to visit ‘Chetna- Special Needs School’. This visit was not just a chance to learn about the experiences of students with special needs, but also an occasion to spread joy during the Diwali festival. The day was filled with meaningful interactions, heartfelt moments, and valuable lessons.
The primary goal of the visit was to foster understanding and empathy among students. Many of the visiting students had little exposure to the special needs community, and this experience aimed to bridge that gap. By engaging directly with their peers at the special needs school, the students could better appreciate the diversity of abilities and challenges faced by others.
Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by the staff and the students. A guided tour provided insights into the facilities designed to support various learning needs. The visiting students were impressed by the specialized classrooms, sensory rooms, and recreational areas, which all played a crucial role in the educational experience of their peers.
Following the tour, the students participated in various interactive activities, including art, music, dance performances by the young goenkans and games. These sessions allowed everyone to collaborate and express themselves creatively, breaking down barriers and building friendships. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and excitement as students worked together on projects, showcasing their talents.
The Goenkans had the opportunity to express their feelings by sharing gifts, which had been thoughtfully taken by the students of GD Goenka Public School.
The Headmistress, Ms. Shaily Dawra, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of sharing and caring. The gifts, ranging from art supplies and books to toys and games, were chosen to encourage creativity and play. As each gift was handed out, the joy on the faces of the special needs students was palpable. This simple act of giving created a sense of celebration, reinforcing the idea that everyone deserves to feel valued and included.
The students felt blessed to be a part of a noble cause and to spread happiness on the joyous occasion of Diwali.
